Kathleen Corbet, who was recognized as “Humanitarian of the Year” at our 2011 “Giving Women Credit” Benefit, brings more than 25 years of global leadership and entrepreneurial experience in the financial services industry. Currently, she is the Founder and Principal of Cross Ridge Capital, LLC, a firm specializing in venture capital and strategic consulting in financial information, technology and renewable energy. In addition, she is one of the founding members of Pro Mujer’s Senior Advisors, and a founding member of Boston College’s Council for Women.

Dr. Langer is the Director of the Women and Health Initiative at the Harvard School of Public Health and is a Professor in its Department of Global Health and Population. She is a physician specialized in pediatrics and neonatology, as well as a reproductive health expert, public health researcher, and advocate for women’s reproductive health and rights.

This document outlines the Working Group members’ vision for the positive evolution of the microfinance field and underscores their commitment to raising industry standards, starting with their own.  Central to this vision is the Working Group’s support for three ambitious initiatives that are helping to lay the groundwork for a more responsible, client-focused and transformative industry: the Smart Campaign, MicroFinance Transparency and the Social Performance Task Force’s universal standards for social performance management.

The Microfinance CEO Working Group members call for their valued peers in the microfinance industry to take action by endorsing these three initiatives, transforming their principles into action, and striving for better ways to provide financial services for the poor.

Este documento traza la visión de los integrantes del Grupo de Trabajo dirigida a realizar una evolución positiva en el campo de las microfinanzas, y recalca su compromiso con elevar los estándares de la industria –comenzando con los estándares propios. Una parte fundamental de la visión del Grupo de Trabajo es apoyar tres iniciativas ambiciosas que están ayudando a sentar las bases para una industria más responsable, centrada en el cliente y transformadora: The Smart Campaign, MicroFinance Transparency y los estándares universales para la gestión del desempeño social del Social Performance Task Force.

McGraw-Hill has been working with Pro Mujer in Peru since 2007, and its most recent grant provides funding for all five countries in which Pro Mujer operates. McGraw-Hill supports organizations that are increasing economic opportunities for impoverished communities traditionally excluded from mainstream banking and loans. This new product is part of a pilot project whose objective is to provide clients with progressive housing solutions and in this way improve their quality of life and that of their families. The goal of the pilot is to reach 100 families in the city of Salta and provide training to 500 families through workshops run by Habitat for Humanity, which will cover topics such as the importance of housing, financial education, and home improvement administration.

This innovative partnership, which received financial support from Citi, combined the methodologies of communal development, home improvement and volunteers from Habitat for Humanity with experience in microcredit and a group of Pro Mujer clients.

Celina Malvazo, the leader of the project on behalf of Habitat for Humanity, explained that the objective is “for more families in the north of Argentina to be able to improve their living conditions, and most importantly, to renew their belief in their ability to do so”.

On Thursday, November 24^th, an event was held in Salta marking the pilot’s culmination. During the afternoon a group of supporters and clients of Pro Mujer were recognized for their good performance over the course of the pilot. Clients had the opportunity to share their home improvement experiences with event attendees, which included staff and volunteers from Pro Mujer, Habitat for Humanity and Citi.

The credit was geared toward long-time clients of Pro Mujer with good performance records with the organization, as a way to recognize their excellent loan repayment history. The pilot program benefited a total of 63 families and disbursed $277,436 Argentinian pesos or approximately US$64,700.

Este producto es parte de un proyecto piloto el cual tiene como objetivo proporcionar a las clientas con una solución habitacional progresiva y de esta manera mejorar su calidad de vida y la de sus familias. El piloto fijó como meta alcanzar 100 familias en el sudeste de Salta y capacitar a 500 familias por medio de los talleres impartidos por Hábitat para la Humanidad los cuales cubrieron temas tales como la importancia de la vivienda, educación financiera y la administración de mejoras habitacionales.

Esta innovadora alianza, la cual contó con el apoyo financiero de Citi, combinó las metodologías de desarrollo comunitario, mejora de vivienda y movilización de voluntariado de Hábitat para la Humanidad con la experiencia en microcrédito y el grupo de socias de Pro Mujer.

La líder del proyecto por parte de Hábitat para la Humanidad, Celina Malvazo, expresó que el objetivo es “que más familias en el norte argentino puedan mejorar sus condiciones de vida y sobre todo que renueven la esperanza de poder hacerlo”.

El jueves 24 de noviembre se realizó en Salta el evento de cierre de las actividades realizadas en el marco del proyecto. Durante la tarde se reconoció a los grupos solidarios y socias de Pro Mujer por su buen desempeño a lo largo del piloto. Las socias tuvieron la oportunidad de compartir sus experiencias  en Pro Mujer así como las cuestiones relacionadas con el mejoramiento de su vivienda con los asistentes, los cuales incluyeron personal y voluntarios de Pro Mujer, Hábitat para la Humanidad y Citi.

Los créditos fueron destinados a socias de Pro Mujer con antigüedad y buen desenvolvimiento en la organización, buscando así reconocer su excelente comportamiento de pago a lo largo de su historial crediticio. El total de familias beneficiadas con este piloto fue de 63 y el monto desembolsado fue de $277,436 pesos argentinos o $64,700 dólares estadounidenses.

At this year’s “Giving Women Credit” Benefit, which was held on Wednesday, October 19th in NYC, Pro Mujer saluted a very special guest -  Luisa Daniel Pérez, a client from Mexico and a 2010 Banamex “Microentrepreneur of the Year.”

The day before the Benefit, I accompanied Luisa down to the New York Stock Exchange for a sit-down interview with José Antonio Montenegro from CNN en Español’s “GloboEconomia.”

Before heading up to the studio to do the interview, José gave us a special behind-the-scenes tour of the Exchange. I first met Luisa in Mexico back in August and knew the trials and tribulations she’s overcome over the years. It was a particularly proud moment seeing a microentrepreneur like Luisa looking out over the trading floor of the world’s largest stock exchange.

En el evento a beneficio  ”Giving Women Credit”  de este año, se hizo un homenaje a una invitada muy especial – Luisa Daniel Pérez, cliente de Pro Mujer de México y ganadora del Premio Banamex a la Microempresa 2010.

El día antes del evento a beneficio, acompañé a Luisa hasta la Bolsa de Valores de Nueva York para que hiciera una entrevista con José Antonio Montenegro de CNN en Español “GloboEconomía“.

Antes de dirigirse al estudio para hacer la entrevista, José nos dio un tour especial “detrás de las cámaras” de la Bolsa. Conocí a Luisa en México el pasado agosto y conocía las pruebas y tribulaciones que había superado en los últimos años. Fue un momento de orgullo ver a una microempresaria como Luisa mirando hacia el piso de operaciones de la bolsa de valores más grande del mundo.
